Each year, Special Olympics of Virginia hosts the Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games in Richmond. The games attract more than 1,300 athletes to the University of Richmond for two days of competition, goodwill and community pride.
While there was no shortage of competitors and their families, attracting fans for the games has been challenging. Summer Games organizers realized that grandstands full of cheering fans would have a tremendous impact on the competitors' sense of accomplishment.
Seeking to drive fans to the games, Special Olympics turned to RightMinds for an innovative solution.
Volunteer2Cheer.com
, a new microsite which invites "Fans of Fun" to attend the games
Using the tagline, "It's Not as Special Without Fans," the site drove home the difference that fans make to athletes competing in the games
The site allowed visitors to sign-up to "Volunteer 2 Cheer" for a 2 hour commitment or for all day. The site even delivered reminder emails as the event drew near
Volunteer2Cheer.com
helped draw more than 1,000 cheering fans to the games, the most in the history of the event
Special Olympics leaders recognized the site as a "remarkable" tool to increase community involvement in the games
In just one month,
Volunteer2Cheer.com
logged more than 68,000 hits from 2,500 unique visitors and registered more than 1,000 volunteer fans
